Historic Blizzard Forecast For D.C. Area

February 4th, 2010 by kimberlyhines

VIA MYFOXDC:

Winter Storm Warning in effect from 10 am Friday to 10 PM EST Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow with near-blizzard conditions which is in effect from 10 am Friday to 10 PM EST Saturday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

The NWS is predicting heavy snow with accumulations of 16 to 24 inches.

The snow will begin mid-morning Friday and will continue through Saturday evening. Conditions will deteriorate rapidly Friday afternoon with heaviest snowfall occurring between sunset Friday to sunrise Saturday.

The most hazardous winter weather conditions will occur Friday night when the combination of heavy snow and strong winds will reduce visibilities to below one-quarter mile producing near-blizzard conditions.

Temperatures will be highs in the lower 30s Friday. Friday night and Saturday temperatures will be in the mid 20s.

Winds are becoming northeast 10 to 20 mph Friday with gusts to 30 mph Friday night and Saturday.

This storm has the potential to be similar to the 19 December storm. People should plan for substantial disruptions to travel Friday afternoon through the weekend.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or nearly impossible Friday night.

The Carmelo soap opera is officially over. Carmelo Anthony is officially a New York Knick.  The Knicks gave up the farm and some ocean front property to get him but I’m glad it’s finally over. Let’s move on to a new sports story.

Via ESPN

The New York Knicks have acquired Carmelo Anthony, sources told ESPN The Magazine’s senior writer Chris Broussard on Monday night.

The swap is a three-way deal including Minnesota, a league source told Broussard.

Albert Haynesworth Charged With Assault in Virginia

February 4th, 2011 by mmartin

Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth has been charged with simple assault in Virginia. Police say he threw a punch at a fellow motorist Wednesday in a Washington, D.C., suburb.

Fairfax County authorities told The Washington Post that Haynesworth, 29, plans to turn himself in next week through his attorney. But Haynesworth’s agent, Chad Speck, said Friday the player had yet to speak to police or prosecutors.

Haynesworth allegedly threw a punch to the nose of Joel Velazques, 38, of Lessburg, Va.

Takoma Park Bank Robbery Suspect Killed

January 28th, 2011 by mmartin

An alleged bank robber was shot and killed Friday morning during a dramatic hostage situation outside of a Capital One Bank on University Boulevard East in Takoma Park, Md.

Chopper4 captured the hostage situation as it unfolded at about 9:30 a.m. at the corner of New Hampshire Avenue and University Boulevard, just as the alleged robber came out of the bank with gun to the head of a female hostage. The suspect used the woman as a shield but he was eventually shot by police.

The suspect held the female bank teller hostage as he left the bank, located in the 1100 block of University Boulevard East. As police surrounded them, a dye pack apparently went off. There was a brief struggle between the alleged robber and the hostage, and the woman started to run. The alleged robber chased after her, but appeared to slip on ice and was shot by police.
The alleged robber was taken into custody and was later pronounced dead.

Boil Water Advisory Issued For PG County

January 24th, 2011 by mmartin

Via Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission:

As a precaution, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) has issued a Boil Water Advisory (BWA) for customers served by WSSC in a large portion of Prince George’s County south of Central Avenue and Route 202 (Landover Road).

To view the area impacted and determine affected customers click on Boiled Water Map. For this and other information, check the WSSC web site (www.wsscwater.com) and the news media for updates. Customers who do not have access to the internet can contact the WSSC Customer Call Center at 301.206.4001 or after 5.30 p.m. call 301.206.4002.

About 400,000 WSSC customers are affected by a 54-inch water main break in the 9200 block of E. Hampton Drive in Capitol Heights. The break of the 40-year-old water main occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m.

When water systems lose pressure there is an increased risk of contamination. Therefore, the WSSC recommends if you live in the affected area, that you boil water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and food preparation. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and cooled before using. Water for pets should be boiled and then cooled for their use.
